Whispering interpretation is used when, for example, one (or not more than two) of the conference participants do not understand the conference language. In this case, the interpreter sits behind these persons and whispers a simultaneous translation. This mode of interpreting is advisable if only a few participants do not understand the language that is spoken, and if these poeple most probably do not intend to speak themselves (because in that case, consecutive interpretation for the rest of the audience would be needed).

Whispering interpretation basically works like simultaneous interpretation, albeit without the technical support. Background noise in the room can make whispering interpretation very strenuous for both, the interpreter and the listener. This is why this mode of interpreting should only be used in special cases.

Since whispering interpretation requires just as much concentration as simultaneous interpretation, the interpreters also work in teams only.
